The 5 Best Items for Transitioning Seasons

Ginni Pinckert

We've been big fans of Fall on the beach for years (this is LA, after all), but does this current Indian Summer seem like a bit much to anyone else? Suddenly, it looks like we'll be lucky to have it cool down before Thanksgiving! Thank goodness, it has started to cool down a bit at night, and that's got me thinking about the best ways to solve that oh-so-California conundrum: What to wear when the temperature swings from sunny summer day to crisp fall night so quickly?

1. THE GILLIAN LACE DRESS:

There are a multitude of reasons why the Gillian Lace dress is great. Not least of all, it's made of cotton lace, so it breathes like a dream. The long unlined lace sleeves give coverage without overheating, and the flirty tiered skirt is flowy enough to be comfortable even in the stickiest of late summer heat. It's lined through the bodice and skirt in super lightweight crepe de chine silk.

Daytime, wear it with chic flats or sandals (I love these, these, and these). The neckline is perfect for a glittering pendant necklace. When it cools down after sunset, throw on a pair of boots (my current favorites are these, these, and these) with a denim jacket, and you're ready to hit the town!

2. THE AGNES SHIRT DRESS:

The Agnes Shirt Dress is another easy shape, available in not one, but two breathable fabrics; our hand selected blue/green cotton plaid and this gorgeous natural muslin. You can wear the sleeves long or rolled up, depending on the weather. Unlined, for maximum versatility and comfort. If you like having a bit more shape, we recommend wearing it belted - it's beautiful with a gold Chanel chain belt!

The tea-length hemline of this dress makes it super versatile. While we wait out the last lingering days of summer heat, pair with flats. Keep it in rotation when the weather turns by throwing on a pair of tights, a trench coat, and boots

3. THE VIOLET DRESS:

Who says we can't enjoy a pop of gorgeous color in the fall? Aren't the leaves themselves treating us to their very own chromatic grandeur? Buck the rules and join them with our floral silk Violet dress! The lightweight billowy chiffon and unlined sleeves make this an ideal transition piece. Undulating waves of silk skim the figure without confining it. Body lined with silk georgette, cementing the theme of weightless fluttering femininity.

This is a gorgeous and girly dress, so you have the option of keeping the shoes in theme, or going for a contrasting masculine/feminine look. For girly try pointy flats in the daytime, and mary jane pumps for evenings. To get the contrasting look try moccasins or brogues.  When the temperature dips, make the colors in this print pop even more by pairing with dark tights and boots, and laying under a similarly hued chunky sweater.

4. THE CHOIR DRESS:

The Choir Dress is cut from a lightweight yet wonderfully stiff muslin, ideal for creating structure without needing a shape that would feel too tight and restraining during the heat wave. Featuring fine detailing like subtle pleats at the bust, bodice, and cuffs, this dress is perfect for making a statement without screaming it. Contrasting black buttons complete the subtle effect.

Direct attention on the minute craftsmanship by keeping accessories subtle. For super hot days, I love a simple flat or sandal.  When the sun goes down, through on a pair of over-the-knee boots. Later in the year, this dress would be fabulous under a black blazer or trench.

5. THE DENIM TRENCH COAT:

In my opinion, everyone needs a go-with-everything jacket they can throw into their car for emergencies. The Denim Trench is perfect for this! The high quality denim is virtually indestructible, and only looks better as it ages and wears. Best of all, the versatility of denim makes it so you can throw this over whatever outfit you happen to have on without worrying about trying to match. The crepe-de-chine lining make this coat ideal for crisp fall nights that have yet to attain winter frigidity.

Toss this jacket on over any of the dresses mentioned above while summer temperatures linger. When it starts getting chilly, layer over dresses with longer hemlines, or tailored pants. I love offsetting the denim in feminine pumps like these.

Above all, remember that these difficult to predict temperatures afford us a great opportunity to do some style experimentation! Throw something summery into your fall repertoire that you normally wouldn't. Have fun with it! If Mother Nature wants us to work our way into fall at her gradual pace, we are ready for her.

Until next time,

Ginni
